Our Mission

The Wednesday Morning Group (WMG) is a weekly meeting of professional women, men and parents who gather in a spirit of mutual support, camaraderie, and intellectual curiosity to hear and interact with stimulating guest speakers and each other.

Who We Are

The Wednesday Morning Group is a unique lecture series meeting weekly during the Montgomery County school year. Originally founded nearly 50 years ago by members of the Cedar Lane Unitarian Church to provide a discussion group for mothers, the group is now its own organization, open to all, and consisting of both men and women of a wide range of ages and interests. Members are parents of young children who have left the work force to raise their children full or part-time, empty-nesters, and grandparents alike. The lectures cover an array of topics including current events, literature, art, education, child-rearing and social issues. Past speakers have included national and local news personalities, authors, politicians, scientists and policymakers.

Membership fees of $100 per year ($50 for membership beginning in the spring session) are used to publish a quarterly newsletter, subsidize on-site cooperative childcare, buy office supplies, and make a sizable donation to the church for use of the space. Neither the speakers nor the board members receive financial compensation. Membership capacity in WMG is based on the availability of space in the babysitting co-op. Membership is open to anyone regardless of age, race, or gender.

About the Lectures

The calendar averages nearly 40 lectures per year divided into two terms. The lecture program for each term is determined by a committee (open to all members) chaired by two or three members. WMG offers book signings for most of the authors who speak to the group. The Wednesday Morning Group meets Wednesday mornings at 9:30 am with a "Coffee Talk" lasting half an hour. Lectures begin at 10:00 am and end at 11:00 am sharp.

The Wednesday Morning Group (WMG) meets every Wednesday that Montgomery County Schools are in session. We do not meet during holiday breaks or the summer. We do not meet when school is canceled or delayed.

Guests

Guest fees are $5 per lecture per guest for a maximum of two lectures. Parents, spouses and adult children of WMG may attend for free up to twice per year.

Guests with children MUST check with The Wednesday Morning Group BEFORE their visit to ensure that there is space in the babysitting co-op. The co-op fee for visiting children is $5 per child. Space for visiting children in the childcare co-op varies each term. Please contact the Wednesday Morning Group co-op with the number and ages of your child(ren) if you plan to visit to ensure availability of space. The childcare registration form may be found here.

Our Location

The Wednesday Morning Group meets weekly at the
Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church. Although we are not affiliated with the Church, we are grateful for the privilege of using the Church's space for numerous years.
