The Wednesday Morning Group (WMG) is a lecture series meeting weekly from September to June during the Montgomery County, Maryland school year. WMG was established nearly 60 years ago to provide stimulating, intellectual discussions built around a wide range of topics including lectures on current events, literature, art, health, education, child-rearing, science, and social issues. Past speakers have included local, national, and internationally-known authors, scientists, policy makers, journalists, performing artists, and newsmakers. WMG is volunteer-run.
Our membership fee is $115 per year and membership is open to anyone regardless of age, race, or gender. Membership capacity is constrained by the size of our meeting space and, at the present time, we have a two-year waiting list for new members.
Between November and June, guests of members may attend a maximum of two sessions for $5 per visit. Parents, spouses, and adult children of WMG members may attend for free up to twice per year.
Guests with pre-school age children MUST check with the Wednesday Morning Group BEFORE their visit to check if there is space available in the babysitting co-op. The co-op fee for visiting children is $5 per child. Space for visiting children in the co-op varies each term. By the Friday preceding your visit, please contact email@example.com with the number and ages of your child(ren) to ensure availability of space.
ABOUT THE LECTURES
The WMG calendar averages about 40 meetings per year, divided into two semesters. The lecture program for each semester (September to January and February to June) is determined by a program committee (open to all members) that meets each spring to plan the following program year. As a committee, we generate about 200 ideas for the limited number of lectures each year; as a result, unsolicited pitches seeking speaking opportunities are NOT encouraged.
The Wednesday Morning Group meets weekly every Wednesday that Montgomery County Public Schools are in session. We do NOT meet during summer, school holidays, OR if school is canceled or there is a delayed opening.
We meet at the Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church in Bethesda (see map and details below). Although we are not affiliated with the Church, we are grateful for the privilege of using the Church’s facilities for many years.
